Protecting Communities in Protected Landscapes: rethinking housing in National Parks
14 April 2026, 6-7pm
While national parks are cherished for their natural beauty and biodiversity, they are also living landscapes — home to communities who sustain local economies, maintain traditions and steward the land. Across Europe, these communities are facing growing housing pressures driven by second homes, short-term holiday lets, rising property prices and limited supply. High-impact tourism and changes to the housing market threaten the ability for a young, working population to thrive in national parks.
In this webinar, Aila Taylor presents ground-breaking research from Friends of the Lake District into the impacts of short-term holiday lets and second homes in the Lake District National Park. Following this, she will present the charity’s new campaign – Fairer Housing, Stronger Communities – offering potential solutions to the housing crisis in national parks, so that we can build a future where nature and communities thrive side-by-side.
