Climate change is fundamentally changing the context in which Protected Landscapes are managed. Even under the lowest emissions scenarios many of our features (habitats, ecosystems, land use, visitation, cultural) will endure rapid transformations in the coming decades which require practitioners to consider new approaches to conservation and landscape management.

This webinar will introduce Landscape Observatory’s work to create an AI mapping tool for English Protected Landscapes and build on how this mapping data will be used to advance the latest critical thinking in conservation management in particular moving beyond static management plans. The climate smart adaptive management farmwork is intended to help practitioners navigate the difficult decisions and move away from core ‘protected’ values that have defined management work and personal perceptions until now.

The team will also share Landscape Observatory’s approach to developing the Resist, Accept, Direct (RAD) toolkit with Protected Landscapes and its wider partners, with a focus on how better evidence, collaboration and decision-support can help Protected Landscapes respond to climate change while continuing to deliver for nature, people and place.

The session will provide an opportunity to share learning from England and explore how approaches to climate-smart adaptive management could be relevant to Protected Areas across Europe.
